Mary E. Hunt to Receive Peter J. Gomes Memorial Honors
at Harvard Divinity School 200th Anniversary

Dear WATER Colleagues and Friends,

WATER staff is proud to announce that our own Mary E. Hunt, MTS ‘74, will be honored on April 29, 2017 by the Alumni/ae Council at Harvard Divinity School on the occasion of the school’s 200th Anniversary.

Mary will receive the Peter J. Gomes STB ’68 Memorial Honors, along with three other distinguished Harvard Divinity School graduates and two others. They are all “people who have changed the world” – “chosen not only for their impact on the world,” but in this bicentennial year, “also for the way they changed Harvard Divinity School.”

Mary’s award shines light on her pioneering work at the Women’s Alliance for Theology, Ethics, and Ritual (WATER) and on the many accomplishments of women in religion worldwide. It points to the work that needs to be done to assure that people of color, LGBTIQ people, women, and other previously marginalized people are central to religious life and theological reflection.

Peter Gomes was the highly esteemed and beloved Plummer Professor of Christian Morals at Harvard Divinity School and Pusey Minister at Harvard’s Memorial Church.

The Peter J. Gomes Memorial Honors “recognizes distinguished HDS alumni whose excellence in life, work, and service pays homage to the mission and values of Peter J. Gomes STB ’68 and Harvard Divinity School. Gomes Honorees represent the diversity of personal and professional paths that the School’s graduates follow.”

Congratulations, Mary!

You are an outstanding woman who changes the world.

You love with fierce tenderness, act with justice,
and welcome everyone to the table.

You call us each to excellence in life, work, and service.

You inspire us! You make us proud!
