Follow-up to WATERmeditation with Cynthia Tootle

“An Inward Journey through Guided Meditation”

Monday, June 2, 2025, 7:30 PM ET

Cynthia Tootle led us through a guided meditation that she crafted. It was a powerful experience for many. WATER thanks her for her inspiring leadership and we look forward to her next offering.

Mary E. Hunt’s Introduction to Cynthia Tootle:

The Rev. Cynthia Tootle is WATER’s nearest neighbor. She lives mere blocks from the office and enjoys a wonderful deep backyard which I am sure is beautiful this season.

Cynthia is an engineer by training and vocation. She had a long career with the federal government at a time when few women were doing her kind of work.

Now, in retirement from the government, she has become a very active minister at the Takoma Metaphysical Chapel in Takoma Park, MD, suburban Washington, DC. It is an eclectic group of people, welcoming and inviting, a place so necessary in this town where many people are out of work, are immigrants, and/or others seeking meaning in hard times.

Guided Meditation:

Cynthia began with a relaxation of the body. Then invited us to connect with a friend “on the other side” and make known to that person what we intended to learn or explore. We connected with one person, made our intentions known, and listened to what they said. Then we had a chance to add another person to the mix if we wished, and hear their wisdom as well.

It is important to listen to the whole meditation with attention to Cynthia’s many ways of making people feel inclined to “leave the body” and move to a non-bodily sphere.

This was not the sort of experience that is easy to convey. But it was clear from the remarks following the meditation that people had found it very fruitful. As Cynthia said, insights might unfold over days and indeed it is that way.

Among the participants’ remarks were several expressions of thanks to Cynthia for her skill and care. One person said that she needed Cynthia for her morning meditation each day! Another said it was wonderful and she really needed this experience on this evening. Adding a second person to the mix was appreciated by another person. Someone else remarked that she might add this approach to her own spiritual direction and hospice ministry. In all, Cynthia demonstrated a great way to meditate. Here is a little meditation for you: Happy Earth Meditation (Editor’s Note—This is not the meditation that is on the video of our session. This is simply another generous gift from Cynthia for which we are grateful.)

Prepare yourself for meditation by clearing your lap and hands and putting your feet flat on the floor.

Relax now with a deep breathe.  With each breathe, inhale the peace and exhale any tension in your body.

You are climbing a mountain. As you climb you look at the plants and creatures around you.

You see, through the trees, rocky crags and snow topped mountains.

You climb until you are above the trees.  And when you are ready, when you reach the top or when you reach a rock with a breathe-taking view, you sit down.

You let yourself relax and feel the rock and earth beneath you.  You feel the heat of the sun in them and the complete solidness of the earth.

Then, you open yourself up to the movement of the earth. You feel the spin of the planet beneath you.

You feel the earth traveling at incredible speeds through space.

You feel the pull of the moon and sun and planets.

Dream, if you will, that for one moment the gravity of the earth lessens. Nothing is holding you to the planet. You are thrown out into space, spinning through the void and being pulled here and there.

But that is just a dream.  Awake now as you lie on the rock on the mountain on planet earth.

Feel how carefully she holds you.

Feel how she pulls on every cell of your body.

Feel the prefect pull, not too hard so you can’t move, not too soft so you drift ungrounded.

Feel how she embraces you.

Now it is time to come back to your body here in the chapel.

Take a deep breath and move your body and, when you are ready, open your eyes.

Thanks to Cynthia Tootle for an unforgettable experience and for continuing to bless this group with her skills and wisdom.

Our next WATERmeditation will be Monday, July 7, 2025, at 7:30 PM ET with WATER interns Magdalena Müller and Wed Naji leading. All are welcome.
